Have you a number? I have. What is your number? Two. What two? The two spies whom Rahab concealed. Where did she conceal them? In her house. Where was her house? Neither in or out of town. Where was it? On the towns walls. In what part of the house did she conceal the spies? On the roof. By what means? Stocks of unprepared flax laid in order. How did she let them down? ADDRESS The emblems worn for this degree are the crossed bugles representing the ram’s horns that were used by the priests when they encompassed the city of Jericho. The lesson we learn from this degree is one of faith. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. But as we live in milder times than in the days of the destruction of Jericho, our faith does not teach us to crave for the blood of our enemies. The benefits and blessings which we now enjoy have come down to us through the faith of those whose severity’s we some times deplore. And our lives should be an inspiration to those who come after us who attack unsparingly the evils of their day. Though unworthy as Rahab who sat upon the walls of ignorance until she met the two representatives of faith and let them down with a scarlet line of understanding which brought salvation to herself and to her household. Not until then did she understand the meaning of that secret compact our life for yours if you uttereth not this our business. It is emblematic of the Holy Trinity in which, had you not been a believer you could not have been admitted a member of our illustrious order. The first time you counted them there were twelve lights, which represented the twelve sons of Jacob. The second time you counted them there was but eleven, representing the time when Joseph was sold as a slave into Egypt and supposed to be dead. Joseph did die in Egypt, it is true, but not until the Lord had brought about a reunion between him and his brethren, which was represented the third time, you counted them and beheld twelve lights.
