Blasphemous Masonic Titles

Freemasonry has many blasphemous Masonic titles. But why would they even go there? To answer this one needs do penetrate behind its thick wall of secrecy and understand the mindset of those who attracted to such an esoteric organization.

The Masonic Lodge attracts a certain type of human being. There is something that draws particular men to it. For some it may be intrigue, for others family tradition, and maybe a few are interested in occult mysteries, but to most it is more base and basic. Freemasonry attracts those who crave recognition and position. It is ultimately a home for the proud. Its members love the offices, the elaborate ceremonial, the continual recognition and the lofty titles. It feeds their pride and puffs up their self-esteem.

If it wasn’t as serious, the whole subject of Lodge titles would be quite laughable. It is quite amazing to observe some of the ridiculous titles Freemasonry bestows upon its members. The Lodge liberally throws the most illustrious and overweening appellations upon its disciples. Freemasonry takes various eminent and holy spiritual descriptions and religious offices from the Bible (Old and New Testament) that pertain exclusively to God and applies them to its adherents; it also takes appellations that pertain solely to the people of God and give them to its ungodly devotees.

Many of these Masonic titles are blasphemous. The Lodge even tries to outdo Scripture with some of its mind-boggling titles and haughty positions.

Puissant

During the ritual of the 19th Degree of the Scottish Rite the candidate swears an oath of secrecy and an oath of total obedience. The Master of the Lodge is called “Thrice-Puissant.” It is worth noting, this word “Puissant” means mighty or powerful. Here, the Master of the Lodge takes upon himself a designation that can only be used by God – namely thrice-mighty or powerful.

One of the most astonishing titles given to a Mason is given to the leader of the Supreme Council of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite; it is “Most Puissant Sovereign Grand Commander.” Imagine attributing such a lofty title to puny wretched sinful man? Think about it – ‘Most mighty and powerful Sovereign Grand Commander’. The Lieutenant Grand Commander is addressed officially as “Puissant Grand Commander.”

Do Masons never enquire as to the meaning of these labels or are they just so utterly deceived that they actually imagine that they can seriously claim these lofty titles as their own? This is a blasphemous Masonic title.

Eminent

In the Grand Commanderies of the States the officers are addressed as “Eminent,” “Right Eminent” and “Very Eminent.” The Grand Master of the Grand Encampment of Knights Templar enjoys even more prestige; he is reverentially known as “Most Eminent.” After considering these lofty appellations, one wonders what grade of eminence Masons believe Christ deserves? After all, if the Grand Master of the Grand Encampment of Knights Templar is the “Most Eminent” what does that make Jesus – the 2nd Most Eminent? Surely anyone other than the “Most Eminent” would have to be subservient?

This is a blasphemous Masonic title.

Potentate

The Imperial Council of the Ancient Arabic Order, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, addresses all Imperial officers as “Imperial Sir”; Temples of the Shrine address the Potentate as “Illustrious Potentate.” The name Potentate comes from the Latin potens which means powerful. It refers to one that has supreme power. 1 Timothy 6:14-15 tells us that our Lord Jesus Christ “shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords.” If Christ is our “only Potentate” why does Masonry attempt to install other potentates? Here again Freemasonry tries to out-glorify Christ in its appellations. Christ is a “Potentate” but the Mason is an “Illustrious Potentate.” These bogus titles certainly reveal the degree of error that infects Masonry.

I – am – that – I – am

In the Royal Arch degree of Freemasonry the lecturer asks, “Are you a Royal Arch Mason?” to which he replies, “I – am – that – I – am.” But this is a name and response that belongs exclusively to God! No one else is entitled to use it of themselves. In thus using this hallowed name, Masons usurp the One to whom it truly belongs, and defile the merit and meaning of these immortal words. God alone is the great “I Am.” Man is not qualified to use such a hallowed title, especially in such a flippant manner. It is solely a divine designation. For Masons to use this holy title in such a glib manner (as they do) is to step into the arena of blasphemy. Their careless treatment of this choice title illustrates the irreverent attitude that exists within this secret institution. It shows that Freemasonry has no proper regard for the holy things of God and has evidently no understanding of the dangers involved in applying divine titles to its members.

This is a blasphemous Masonic title.

The revival preacher Charles G. Finney in his book Character and Claims of Freemasonry declares, “‘I – am – that – I – am’ is one of the peculiar names of Deity; and to use it as above, is to say the least taking the name of God in vain. How must the humble disciple of Jesus feel when constrained thus to answer the question? … Here you observe the candidate taking the Royal Arch degree, when asked if he is a Royal Arch Mason, replies: ‘l am that l am’; which is represented in the Bible as being said by Jehovah himself. This answer was given by God to Moses when he inquired after the Divine name. God answered, ‘I AM THAT I AM’. Just think! a Christian, when inquired of if he is a Royal Arch Mason, affirms of himself ‘I am that I am’, taking to himself the name of the God of Israel.”

The whole background to the revelation of this name is outlined in Exodus 3:13-14, where Moses asks God, “Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?” The reading then records God’s response, saying, “And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.” This was the inimitable name by which God wanted to be revealed to the children of Israel. In stating this God was telling Moses that He is the great I Am the matchless, eternal, self-existing, and almighty God. He is asserting that there is “none beside me.”

How can Freemasonry possibly imagine it can realistically use this exalted and hallowed name of Jehovah?

We recommend a revealing book written by the great revivalist Charles Finney who was a former Freemason (The Character, Claims And Practical Workings Of Freemasonry):

Grand Captain of the Host

The Grand Lodge of Royal Arch Masonry elevates it members to the office of “Grand Captain of the Host”. This title is quite extraordinary. The Bible student will immediately know why. Firstly this name is found in Joshua 5:13-14: “And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant?”

This is a blasphemous Masonic title.

Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown Commentary explains: “the address and the adoration of Joshua, the holiness communicated to the spot by the presence of this Personage, and the application to him of the name Yahweh (Josh 6:2), identify Him with the Angel the Lord, the Second Person of the Trinity. His attitude of equipment betokened his approval of, and interest in, the war of invasion.”

Barnes’ Commentary says: “The Divine Person intimates that He, the Prince (see the marginal references) of the Angels had come to lead Israel in the coming strife.”

This is a Christophany of Jesus Christ in the Old Testament – an appearance, or non-physical manifestation, of Christ. For Freemasonry to assume this title is the utmost folly and reveals the degree of deception that pervades this secretive Order. Royal Arch Masonry doesn’t just take the title of “Captain of the Host” as Christ did but “Grand Captain of the Host.” Freemasonry blasphemes the name of God by offering the titles and offices of Christ to unbelievers.

High Priest

Masonry confers the following religious titles on its member:

Priest
High Priest
Worthy High Priest
Grand High Priest
Most Excellent Grand High Priest
Most Excellent General Grand High Priest

The Bible student will know that there is only one High Priest today – the Lord Jesus Christ. Christ put an end to the earthly line of high priests through His life, death and ongoing ministry. The one true eternal High Priest has executed the last sacrifice for sin, and now sits in heaven interceding for His elect. Thus He perfectly fulfils the two-fold duty of the priest – making atonement for sin, and interceding on the people’s behalf.

The Bible says, “Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession” (Hebrews 4:14).

The Bible tells us, “For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself” (Hebrews 7:26-27).

When Christ ascended to “the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Hebrews 1:3, 8:1) He did so as man’s final perfect High Priest. He was the substance and fulfilment of the Old Testament high priestly order who served as the temporal shadow of the coming Messiah. He met every requirement demanded of God to reconcile the sinner unto God.

Hebrews 4:15 tells us that we have “an high priest” that is “touched with the feeling of our infirmities.” Hebrews 2:17 tells us that Christ was “a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.”

The Masonic conferrals of the said titles are therefore spurious and blasphemous.

Master

Freemasonry bestows the following titles:

Wise Master
Secret Master
Select Master
Royal Master
Venerable Master
Perfect Master
Excellent Master
Super Excellent Master
Most Excellent Master
Worshipful Master
Most Worshipful Master
Most Illustrious Grand Master
Most Eminent Grand Master
Most Worshipful Sovereign Grand Master

If man is truly worthy of these elevated titles, what type of Master is Christ? It seems like whatever the Bible forbids Freemasonry uses and elevates. The Lord Himself said of the religious title Master: “Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ” (Matthew 23:10). Nothing could be clearer. In typically revolt against this New Testament prohibition, the Lodge presides over the large-scale conferment of the religious title Master upon countless ungodly men.

This is a blasphemous Masonic title.

We get a revelation of the character and ethos of the Lodge. It is continually to attack and undermine God and His Word.

Freemasonry has no authority to oversee the profane granting of such religious titles. It is surely a sign of ultimate deception that a religious Order would steal divine titles and apply it to its own devotees. By investing its members with divine terms we see the gross delusion that exemplifies Masonry.

Other ostentatious titles

Freemasonry employs other ostentatious offices like Most Excellent Prince, Most Excellent Scribe and Most Excellent King to cater to the carnal need of its self-righteous members. Other titles include Most Worshipful Prince, Grand King and Grand Scribe.

Why would Masons not be oozing with pride after being inducted into such exalted positions? The reality is: we are looking at fictional and imaginary religious terms.

Other exalted titles include:

Sovereign Grand Commander
Venerable Lieutenant Grand Commander
Grand Pryor
Grand Chancellor
Grand Secretary General
Sovereign Grand Inspector General

Conclusion

It goes without saying, the conferment of these titles are bogus and illusionary. Only the ignorant or deceived could surely take them serious. These artificial classifications are another proof that Masonry is in deliberate and rigorous conflict with Christianity. As one studies this subject you quickly discover that the Lodge has set itself up as a competitor with God for greatest. Time after time, degree after degree, sees Masonry stealings terms that pertain to God alone and applying them to its members. This is an exercise in ultimate folly and clear evidence that Freemasonry is totally deceived.

The bestowing of these imaginary terms reveal the distain Masonry holds for Almighty God and the Word of God. Whether the candidate knows it or not, every aspect of Freemasonry is designed to undermine the veracity and authority of the Word of God. No Bible-believing Christian could take such titles upon himself without the Holy Spirit immediately and strongly convicting him of the error of such idiocy.

Freemasonry elevates the egos of its members to the most far-fetched heights. It feeds the base inner craving of sinful man to be recognised and elevated. Masonry has swallowed this evil inducement hook, line and sinker.Satan is all about the elevation of self. The reason is: it automatically results in the dethronement of Christ. Masonry teaches and practices self-exaltation throughout its degrees – the very thing that caused Satan to fall. The Lodge is basically about self-deification (making man god). There is nothing knew about this deception. It goes right back to the beginning. Genesis 3:4-5 shows Satan articulating this same theology in the Garden of Eden to Adam and Eve: “And the serpent said … ye shall be as gods.” The Lodge has swallowed this lie. It wallows in ancient pride, but it misses the fact that everything Satan offers is deceit and destructive. It ultimately leads to separation from God and eternal punishment.

Self-exaltation was the very sin that caused Satan to fall at the beginning. Please note the 5 ‘I wills of Satan’. Isaiah 14:13-15 records: “For thou (speaking of Lucifer) hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.”

In this attempt, Satan manifested every putrid facet of pride. He ultimately wanted to dethrone Christ and the will of God. In place, he wanted to enthrone himself. Satan essentially coveted something that didn’t belong to him. This is what Masonry does in its degrees.

When Masons take descriptions and terms that belong to God and apply them to themselves they are saying: “I will be like the most High.”

Self-exaltation naturally follows self-deception. These types of people deceive themselves into thinking they are greater than they really are. The father of pride, Satan, encourages this self-deception that produces pride, and once pride is introduced, human nature takes over. D.L. Moody says, “God sends no one away empty except those who are full of themselves.” It is no wonder Masons are arrogant and high-minded. This is what the Lodge is all about. It is all about superiority, pride and recognition.

James 4:6 says, “God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.”
