Royal Scarlet Degree

Why do you wear that colour?

What colour?

Royal Scarlet.

Because by it I have obtained great benefits.

What great benefits have you obtained by wearing Royal Scarlet?

By it my brethren were freed from the bondage of all their enemies.

How were you prepared to become a Knight of the Scarlet Order?

By being divested of my outer apparel, even to my inner garments.

Where are you from?

The Land of Shit-tim.

Where are you going?

To spy out secretly.

To spy what out secretly?

All the land even that great city Jericho.

How do you intend to get there?

By the benefit of a password.

Have you that password?

I have

Will you give it to me?

I will, if you begin.

Why do you take Rahab for your password?

Because she concealed the spies.

For more on the internal debate within the Orders we recommend The Orange Order by Brian Kennaway:

Have you a number?

I have.

What is your number?

What two?

The two spies whom Rahab concealed.

Where did she conceal them?

In her house.

Where was her house?

Neither in or out of town.

Where was it?

On the towns walls.

In what part of the house did she conceal the spies?

On the roof.

By what means?

Stocks of unprepared flax laid in order.

How did she let them down?

Hand over hand with a scarlet band.

Where are they now?

Gone to the mountains.

Have you the great and grand pass – word of the Knights of the Scarlet Order.

I have.

Will you give it to me?

Was there any communication between Rahab and the spies?

There was.

What was it?

The emblems worn for this degree are the crossed bugles representing the ram’s horns that were used by the priests when they encompassed the city of Jericho. The lesson we learn from this degree is one of faith. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. But as we live in milder times than in the days of the destruction of Jericho, our faith does not teach us to crave for the blood of our enemies. The benefits and blessings which we now enjoy have come down to us through the faith of those whose severity’s we some times deplore. And our lives should be an inspiration to those who come after us who attack unsparingly the evils of their day. Though unworthy as Rahab who sat upon the walls of ignorance until she met the two representatives of faith and let them down with a scarlet line of understanding which brought salvation to herself and to her household. Not until then did she understand the meaning of that secret compact our life for yours if you uttereth not this our business.
